the caribbean, also known as the west indies or the antilles, is an archipelago of islands forming a sweeping arc between the southeastern coast of the united states and the northern shores of south america. stretching from cuba in the northwest to trinidad and tobago in the southeast, the region encompasses hundreds of islands, islets, and cays, each offering its own distinctive landscapes, cultures, and architectural styles.
while the bahamas lie just north of cuba and share many historical and cultural ties with the caribbean, they are geographically part of the lucayan archipelago in the atlantic ocean rather than the caribbean sea. to the south, the island chain extends to trinidad and tobago, located just off the northeastern coast of venezuela.

the majority of the population is of afro-caribbean heritage, alongside communities of european and mixed ancestry.

dominica is home to one of the caribbean’s last remaining indigenous communities — the kalinago people (formerly known as the caribs), descendants of the original inhabitants of the region.

some islands are surrounded by the caribbean sea, and some are bordering on one side to the caribbean sea and on the other side to the north atlantic ocean.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS
some of the caribbean islands are flat with powder-white beaches, like anguilla, bahamas, and the beautiful grenadine islands; white sandy beaches can also be found on some parts on most islands like barbados, st. martin, st. barts, st. lucia – and some have high mountains and tropical jungle and flower forests, like martinique, dominica, guadeloupe or st. lucia. they are all still on the northern part of the globe between the 10th and the approximate 25th latitude.
on all of the caribbean islands you will most likely find great beaches and landscapes – on some more beaches – on others more hills and jungles. the decision where you will produce your film or commercial shoot or fashion photos will depend on your mood board, but even if it shows a lot of variety – you will most likely be able to film the whole production on one island.
most of the islands are independent countries with their own governments and their own customs rules. they had all been former colonies of either great britain, france, spain, or the netherlands, and the official languages of the islands are still those of the former colonialists - french, english or spanish.
some caribbean islands are still overseas departments, like the french islands of st. martin, st. barts, martinique, and guadeloupe, so they are part of the european community.
apart from cuba the islands are open to productions and helpful with permits and customs
HOW TO GET TO A CARIBBEAN ISLAND

from the us and canada with approximately 4h flight time from the east coast and around 7h flight from los angeles and most european cities. many major european, american and canadian cities offer direct flights to the caribbean islands with big airports like barbados, saint martin, st. lucia or guadeloupe for instance.
northern caribbean islands are close together and many can be reached by ferry boats. st. martin/sint maarten, in the northern part of the caribbean island chain with the big airport on the independent (former dutch) side (sxm) is the starting point to trips to the smaller surrounding islands like st. barts and anguilla. they can be reached from here by ferry boat (40 min) or small plane - 15 min flight. same applies for st. kitts & nevis, and the remote islands of saba & eustatius, montserrat - just a bit longer trip.
